Product: OMEN 16.1 inch Gaming Laptop PC 16-b0000 (2W6B5AV)

Operating System: Microsoft Windows 11

Every time I plug in my laptop to charge, the whole system slows down significantly. It can take minutes just to open the search bar from the start menu. I dealt with similar issues about four months ago and, after going through countless threads and trying all the suggested fixes, I concluded that the problem was with the charging adapter. Replacing it mostly solved the issue, though I did still experience occasional lag and stuttering when plugged in and playing games. However, in the past few days, the entire system nearly grinds to a halt whenever it's charging. I’m running out of ideas on how to fix this and would appreciate any help.

Hi @PzSweet22,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like your HP Omen 16 is experiencing performance issues when charging, which could be related to power management settings, hardware issues, or the charging adapter itself. Here are some steps to help diagnose and possibly fix the problem.

Check Power Settings:

  • Go to Settings > System > Power & sleep or Control Panel > Power Options.
  • Ensure the power plan set while plugged in is on High Performance rather than Balanced or Power Saver.
  • Check the Processor power management settings within the plan. Ensure that the Maximum processor state is set to 100% when plugged in.

Disable Battery Saver Mode:

  • Sometimes, the system might incorrectly trigger Battery Saver mode while charging. Make sure it’s disabled when plugged in.
  • Go to Settings > System > Battery and disable any automatic battery-saving features while charging.

Check Throttling Settings (NVIDIA/AMD Control Panel):

  • If you have an NVIDIA GPU, go to the NVIDIA Control Panel and navigate to Manage 3D settings > Power Management mode. Set this to Prefer maximum performance for both on battery and plugged in.
  • For AMD GPUs, open the AMD Radeon Settings, and under Global Graphics Settings, make sure the power plan is set to performance mode when plugged in.

Inspect the Charger:

  • Since you previously had issues with the charger, it's possible the new adapter might still be faulty or incompatible. Try using a different charger (if available) to see if the issue persists.
  • Check if the power brick is overheating, as this can cause power regulation issues, leading to performance drops.

BIOS and Driver Updates:

  • Ensure the BIOS and all drivers (especially the GPU and chipset) are up-to-date. HP releases updates that can help resolve issues like this.
  • You can download these from the HP Support website for your specific Omen 16 model.

Monitor Performance with Task Manager:

  • Plug the laptop in and open Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc). Check the CPU, Memory, and Disk usage when the issue occurs.
  • Look for any process that spikes in resource usage when plugged in, as this could point to a software issue or a specific program causing the slowdowns.

Check for Thermal Throttling:

  • Sometimes, plugging in the laptop triggers extra power that increases heat, causing the system to throttle performance. Check your CPU and GPU temperatures using tools like HWMonitor or MSI Afterburner to see if there’s any unusual overheating while plugged in.
  • If temps are too high, consider cleaning the laptop's vents or using a cooling pad to keep it cooler under load.

Try a Clean Boot:

  • Perform a clean boot by disabling startup programs and services that aren’t necessary to see if a specific program is causing the slowdown while charging.
  • Type msconfig in the search bar > go to the Services tab > check Hide all Microsoft services > click Disable all. Then go to the Startup tab in Task Manager and disable all programs that are set to run at startup.

Battery Diagnostics:

  • Run HP Battery Check in HP Support Assistant to ensure the battery health is good and not causing any issues.
  • You could also try calibrating the battery by fully discharging it and then fully charging it without interruption.

Check the Event Viewer for Errors:

  • Open Event Viewer (search for it in the start menu) and look for any warnings or errors related to power, performance, or hardware when you plug in the laptop.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
