How many yards of fabric do I need for a no sew blanket? ›

While the size of your blanket is up to you, you'll want at least 1.5 to 2 yards of fleece to make a blanket. You can use the smaller amount for a child's blanket, but you'll probably want the full 2 yards if making one that's meant to be shared or for an adult.

Fleece is an exceptionally popular choice for tie blankets, and for good reason. This versatile fabric is not only soft but also incredibly warm, making it ideal for cold winter nights or cozying up on the couch.

However, it is much easier than you think to make one, and the added homemade mystique is something to show off. All you have to have is some fabric, a sewing machine, and some patience, and you will be on your way to making a great blanket for the winter months.

How big of a blanket will 2 yards make? For a baby blanket you will need 1 yard of each fabric (so, 2 total yards). For a child's blanket, 1 1/2 yards works well (a total of 3 yards). And, an adult-sized blanket will require 2 yards (4 total yards).

3 yards = 3 feet/yard x 3 = 9 feet x 12″/foot = 108″ x the width of the fabric. 3 yds of 45″ (1.25 yd) width fabric = 3.75 square yards or 11.25 square feet or 4,860 square inches.

Tie a double overhand knot with each pair of strips on the blanket. Tie double overhand knots about 0.5 inches (1.3 cm) away from the base of the strip to avoid wrinkling the surface of the blanket.

For this project, we used two yards of Rainbow Blizzard Fleece and Mint Blizzard Solid Fleece from Joann Fabrics. This fleece is soft, warm and manageable for cutting and tying. Heavy fleece, like anti-pill polar fleece, may be too thick for this project.

When using a sewing machine; select a size 12(80) Universal needle, for sewing most fleece fabrics. Set machine for a long stitch (8 to 10 stitches per inch). A straight stitch or narrow zigzag works best. It is often helpful to decrease the presser foot pressure if possible.

Fleece fabric has a considerable amount of stretch, especially along the cross-grain. That's both good news and bad news for sewers. The good: easing in seams is a breeze. The bad: edges at the cross-grain (like necklines) are prone to stretching, so be sure to stay stitch.

A two yard cut of fabric makes a blanket long enough for a teen (although a bit narrow), a 1 2/3 yard is perfect for a child 5 to 10 years old and a one yard cut is perfect for a baby or toddler.

The size of your blanket is entirely up to you. I would use at least 2 yards of fabric for a blanket for an adult. Make sure that the length and the width are in whole numbers so you can cut the strips evenly. You don't want to be left with half strips at the end.
